Shield Text

SHIELD

Many varieties of shapes and designs existed.  Some were used for fighting and others for ceremonial purposes.  Carrying shields warded off spears and blows from boomerangs or clubs.  They were carved from Mulga or Gidgee and easily deflected missiles.  A broader and flatter shield was preferred for spear attacks, when carving the shield from the selected tree the craftsman took special care with the handgrip.  This handgrip was the only part of the shield which was easily damaged, if damaged a man was defenceless and easy prey for the attacker.
